چکیده

A binary system composed of nematogenic solvent (MBBA) and non-nematogenic solute (biphenyl) is investigated for its phase behavior and the dependence of the order parameter on temperature and composition over its entire nematic region. The nematic to isotropic transition temperature is predicted to be a linear function of solute concentration, whereby the dilation effect is shown to be moderated by a measure of orientational anisotropy of the solute molecules, in the context of Maier-Saupe mean field theory. Further, a correspondence relationship between temperature and concentration for the specification of the nematic order parameter is deduced. These predictions are made on the bases of athermal mixing of the two components in the dilute solution limit and of negligible thermal expansion of each component. The experimental phase diagram and justification of athermal mixing from the DSC thermal data are first offered. The order parameter is deduced from the anisotropic optical properties and the correspondence relationship is established by determinations of the order parameter as a function of composition at constant T and of temperature at constant X. Finally, the order surface is constructed from the correspondence relationship.

An Investigation of MBBA nematic within Generalized Maier-Saupe Theory

Generalized Maier-Saupe theory (GMST) within Tsallis thermostatistics (TT) has been used to investigate the second rank order parameter in a nematic liquid crystal, N-p-methoxybenzylidene p-n-butylaniline (MBBA). Also, the free energy has been investigated at the nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature and the effect of the nonextensivity has been demonstrated. PACS Number(s): 05.20.-y, ...

Phase-conjugate reflection by degenerate four-wave mixing in a nematic liquid crystal in the isotropic phase.

Liquid-crystal materials are composed of molecules with strong anisotropy. An optical field can induce appreciable molecular alignment along the field, resulting in a change of the index of refraction that is proportional to the optical intensity. Third-order nonlinear optical phenomena, such as self-focusing of light,1'2 stimulated scattering,3 and third-harmonic generation,4-6 have been obser...

Anchoring effect of triglycine sulphate cleavage plane on MBBA liquid crystal

2014 On the cleavage surface of ferroelectric triglycine sulphate (TGS) nematic MBBA aligns in different ways on domains with opposite directions of spontaneous polarization. From light intensities passing through twisted nematic MBBA placed between a TGS sample and an anisotropic glass plate the director of MBBA on plus domains of TGS is determined to be close to [508] or [702] crystallographi...

Temperature dependence of the anchoring strength coefficient at a nematic liquid crystal-wall interface

2014 The anchoring strength coefficient B is measured as a function of temperature using a Freedericksz technique in a very thin (l 2.5 03BCm) surfactant-treated cell of methoxybenzylidene butylaniline (MBBA). In the nematic phase this parameter varies from approximately 0.065 to 0.013 erg/cm2 for TNI 20 °C T TNI. The relationship between B and the nematic order parameter is discussed. J. Physi...

Conformational flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals

2014 Using the direct flexoelectric effect in an hybrid (homeotropic-planar) nematic cell, we have measured the bulk flexoelectric coefficient e* for two cyanobiphenyl compounds, 8CB and 8OCB. For 8CB, the flexo coefficient is comparable in sign and magnitude with that of MBBA, i.e. e* ~ + 10-4 cgs. 8OCB presents an anomalously large and negative e* ~ 5 x 10-4 cgs. The small influence of the cy...
